Swiss watch manufacturer Maurice de Mauriac has launched a new timepiece dubbed the “Chrono Modern Grand Prix Zurich,” paying homage to the city’s automotive racing history and the Grand Prix that was supposed to take place in 1939 but was canceled due to World War II.

The timepiece was brought to life in collaboration with the Züri Ring Simulation Motodrom and designed to encapsulate the thrills of motor racing and the spirit of Zurich.

Notably, the Chrono Modern Grand Prix Zurich watch is a part of Maurice de Mauriac’s Pit Stop collection and represents two new dial additions. Having recently been named the official timekeeper for the Zurich Grand Prix 2023, the release couldn’t come at a better time and reflects the brand’s longstanding admiration for motorsports and its knack for crafting timepieces that resonate with the racing ethos.

Stand-out features of the watch’s design include racing stripes and “Lucky Numbers” featured on the dial, allowing wearers to personalize their timepieces with a significant number from 01 to 99. Additionally, the design utilizes a blue and white color palette, symbolizing the city’s historical colors.

The edition comes in two dial variations,  a silvery white and black, encased in brushed stainless steel or black PVD coating. Available in two sizes, 42mm and 45mm, with a build designed for endurance, featuring a screwed bezel, crown and pushers, along with a day-date combination. Behind the design is a Swiss Valjoux ETA 7759 top execution movement with a racing-inspired oscillating weight.

Beyond the watch itself, Tom Mächler, the managing director of the Züri Ring Simulation Motodrom, helped to spearhead the project alongside other enthusiasts including racing legend Hans Herrmann and photographer Rainer W. Schlegelmilch. Together, they created an almost-real racing experience offered at the Züri Ring Simulation, where individuals can virtually race through Zurich’s tracks.

The brand noted “In addition to the Zurich Grand Prix, 200 racetracks and 200 different vehicles can be selected on the simulators. Just like many of (our) watches can be customized in order to provide the owner with a very unique timepiece, be it for motorsports maniacs or for someone who just wishes something very special.”

Maurice de Mauriac’s Chrono Modern Grand Prix Zurich timepiece is available to order now via its official site and is priced at 3,700 CHF or $4,071 USD, with customization options like the lucky number or engraving available at an additional cost.

Elsewhere in watches, a vintage Rolex GMT-Master 1675 is set to headline an upcoming Bob’s Watches auction.
