Norris controlled the pace until a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period began on lap 14. A car halted by Lance Stroll prompted the majority of the field to pit for fresh tires. McLaren called Norris to the box on lap 16 just as the VSC ended. A 7-second stop on lap 17 further delayed his return to the track. The sequence dropped Norris to fifth place behind George Russell.
Charles Leclerc stayed out on old tires for the majority of the race. He led until lap 48 before a late stop resulted in a fourth-place finish. Max Verstappen capitalized on the shifting order after starting third to move into second. He used the layout of the Madring to block a recovering Norris.
