Stone Island Opens New Store on Holiday Isle of Hainan

After launching a new retail concept in Chicago in October of last year, Stone Island enlists Rem Koolhaas‘ architecture studio OMA/AMO once again to design a new store space on the Chinese holiday island city of Sanya, Hainan.
As China completely abandoned entry restrictions this month after almost three years of closed borders, the new space opens just in time for a new wave of travelers who wish to visit the southernmost tip of Hainan Island. Known for its picturesque beaches, crystal clear waters, and tropical forests, Sanya is often described as the country’s version of Hawaii.
The new Stone Island store measures 180 sqm. and occupies the second floor of the Sanya Duty Free shopping complex. Similar to the entryway in Chicago, guests are greeted with a large digital chandelier on the ceiling which broadcasts various brand visuals. Interiors arrive in a mix of concrete, stone, sandblasted cork, and corrugated steel echoing the brand’s futuristic aesthetic. SI’s latest collections as well as Shadow Project offerings will be available at the location, and much of the shelving units are modular, allowing for multiple configurations and activations.
Stone Island’s Sanya location is now open. Looking ahead, more locations are planned for Seoul, Munich, and Stockholm.
