Ye Speaks About YEEZY GAP Partnership Termination
Shedding light on why he ended the 10-year deal on CNBC’s ‘Closing Bell.’
Shortly after news broke that Ye notified Gap that he intends to terminate YEEZY‘s partnership, the multi-disciplinary creative, formerly known as Kanye West, took to CNBC’s Closing Bell to shed light on his announcement. The talk from Ye shed light on the situation that led to the breakdown of the 10-year deal that created YEEZY GAP.
Speaking to CNBC, Ye noted that he had high hopes for the partnership but it was ultimately it was decisions made by Gap executives that did not allow him to bring his vision to fruition. “It was always a dream of mine to be at the Gap and to bring the best product possible to the masses, going on to note how he understood the difficulty at first, “obviously there’s always struggles and back-and-forth when you’re trying to build something new and integrate teams.”
Ye discussed how he had no say over the prices set, adding that unapproved colorways and stockists made him question his place in the partnership. “It was very frustrating, it was very disheartening, because I just put everything I had. I put all of my top relationships…And sometimes I would talk to the guys, the heads, the leaders, and it would just be like I was on mute or something. Our agenda, it wasn’t aligned.” Also revealing that Gap failed to make good on promises to open YEEZY GAP flagship locations as originally planned.
Finishing up the chat, Ye cemented his interest and place in fashion, hinting at how his undeniable influence on “clothing language” will take form on his terms in the future.
“I like the word ‘language’ better than ‘aesthetic,’ because the language is the base [and] aesthetic is just a style…Everyone knows that I’m the leader, I’m the king. A king can’t live in someone else’s castle. A king has to make his own castle.”
