Peter Do’s recent Spring/Summer 2023 collection broke ground not only because it collaborated with K-Pop behemoth SM Entertainment, but also because it introduced his first-ever menswear collection. Additionally, the award-winning designer partnered with TômTex Co. to create ‘leather’ made from food-waste for certain runway items featured in the show.

Taking a closer look at Do’s “Green Chemistry” used in his SS23 collection, two pairs of leather-alternative items made their way in front of buyers and consumers – a pair of tan glossed wide-legged pants, and a pair of black glossed wide-legged pants. Coupled with those trousers, Do also created a tan scoop neck tank and a black scoop neck tank to provide a full look.

Championing sustainability, the leather-like materials were constructed from shrimp and mushroom food-waste, thus presenting an innovative step towards positive changes in clothing production for the fashion industry.

Commenting on the 100% biodegradable material used in the collection, Do says: “Working with TômTex was not only personally meaningful to me as a Vietnamese American and child of immigrants, but also extremely exciting in the sense of being able to incorporate such innovations from my peers into our collection. This partnership was definitely the beginning of textile innovation for us, and we’re excited to continue to explore new techniques and fabrications with TômTex, to move fashion forward.”

Buffering Do’s sentiment, TômTex Co. founder and CEO, Uyen Tran, shares: “We could not have asked for a better partner than Peter Do to introduce our first garments made from seashell waste and mushrooms to the global community. I worked for Peter in the early years of his brand. The philosophy he adopted for fashion and the way he prioritized community and people has profoundly impacted my view of the material world.”

“We are fascinated by the way nature recycles everything because we see today’s waste is tomorrow’s raw materials. Peter Do and TômTex share common values of craftsmanship, quality, innovation and community,” added Tran.

Peter Do’s full runway collection and menswear debut can be viewed on the brand’s website.
