WISM and doublet Come Together to Celebrate Japan's "Gyaru" Culture
Crafting a set of T-shirts around the fashion subculture.
Accompanying its Fall/Winter 2022 collection release, Masayuki Ino‘s doublet label has come together with select shop WISM on a set of “gyaru”-themed T-shirts. Gyaru stands as the Japanese transliteration of the English slang word “gal” and describes a fashion subculture associated with Tokyo’s Shibuya district. The movement popular during Japan’s Heisei era centers around dramatic dress, hairstyling and makeup marking a nonconformist attitude against Japanese standards of its society and beauty.
The WISM x doublet Shibuya “GAL-T” T-shirt release features two tees emblazoned with original graphics inspired by vintage band T-shirts. Leaning into its playful approach to fashion, doublet developed a slight horror element while highlighting the various styles of gyaru dress and signature tanned makeup look. The shirts feature a relaxed fit and come complete with matching doublet branding.
Priced at ¥15,400 JPY (approximately $111 USD), the WISM x doublet Shibuya “GAL-T” T-shirt release is available now at WISM Shibuya, WISM Shinjuku, WISM Horie and BAYCREW’S.
