Marvel StudiosThor: Love and Thunder debuted with a total of $143 million USD at the domestic box office — just slightly behind its projections of $150 million USD.

According to reports, the Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman-led film opened in 4,375 North American theaters and although it fell behind its estimates, Love and Thunder still surpassed the $123 million USD opening of its 2017 predecessor Ragnarok. The movie also holds the third-biggest opening weekend of 2022 so far after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ $185 million USD and Jurassic World Dominion $145 million USD.

Love and Thunder exceeded its projections in the international box office, earning $159 million USD from 47 markets to push its global total to $302 million USD. Variety adds that the film proved to be a popular choice for IMAX, 3D and other premium formats as it accounted for 36% of its global sales; IMAX also earned $23 million USD worldwide and $13.8 million USD in North America.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Julius Onah will direct Captain America 4.
