Find Out What is Really Inside Nike Shox

Ever wonder what is inside Nike Shox? Footwear investigation YouTube channel Rose Anvil recently put together a video to uncover the technology behind the footwear system. Prototyped in 1984 with proof of concept to develop optimal energy return, the system was incubated in the Nike labs until 1997. Ultimately the design comprised of four columns compressed by plates above and below was introduced in 2000.

Despite successful sales, Shox really took off after Vince Carter‘s iconic “Dunk of Death” dunk over France’s Frederic Weis during the 2000 Summer Olympics. Carter debuted the Nike Shox BB4 during the game in the “Midnight Navy”/”Olympic” colorway.

Cutting into a pair of Nike Shox R4s, Rose Anvil broke down the construction of the upper by getting a look at a cross-section of the shoe. The performance of the Nike Shox system is actually thanks to the design of its polyurethane hollow columns. Each column is surprisingly dense with a thick exterior rib and smaller ribs on the interior that disperses energy while transferring it through the two plates.
