Following the official title reveal for the first upcoming sequel to AvatarAvatar: The Way of Water, a series of stills have been revealed offering first looks at the characters and landscapes in the highly-anticipated film. Likely taken from the first official trailer that was screened privately during Disney’s CinemaCon 2022 presentation, the stills reveal the indigenous Na’vi people preparing for war while mounted on submerged sea beasts, underwater shots of a big whale-like creature, and close-ups of the main protagonists Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington).

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” reads the official synopsis.

The upcoming Way of Water sequel is the first of four follow-up films in the works and has been under development since 2010, with preproduction completed in 2017. “When looked at as a whole, the journey across all four will create a larger epic saga,” said producer Jon Landau in an interview. With Avatar historically known for its visuals, director James Cameron has high expectations for the film adding, “I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution, and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off.”
