Nike Air Max Day 2022 Is Here Along with New Sneaker Releases
Celebrate the annual sneaker holiday with updated silhouettes.
Air Max Day, the annual holiday beloved by sneaker enthusiasts, is upon us, along with a collection of all-new Nike Air Max 1 silhouettes. Today, Nike celebrates the 35th anniversary of its iconic Air Max technology, which was introduced with the Air Max 1 silhouette on March 26, 1978. Since then, Air Max has become synonymous with forward-thinking footwear in both the sports and lifestyle realms. Continuing the technology’s legacy, Nike has introduced a new assortment of Air Max options for the annual event, adding the “AM Dawn,” “AM 270 RSG,” “AM 90 SE,” “AM Motif” and “AM97” models to the Air Max 1 lineup.
Mainstays of the Air Max 1 remain: Nike’s Air cushion technology, exposed window paneling at the midsole, tiered striations across the lateral and medial panels and Nike branding throughout, including the Swoosh onomatopoeia, developed by designer Carolyn Davidson in 1971. Inspired by the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, Tinker Hatfield modeled the iconic silhouette with an exposed window at the midsole to display the internal Air cushion. Though risky in the mid-’80s, the industrial design concept catapulted the Air Max 1 into mainstream culture as one of Nike’s most sought-after models. The silhouette’s customizable tiered paneling has seen many iterations since its original release, spawning collaborations with Concepts and Patta in recent times.
Continuing the Air Max legacy, the new “AM Dawn” presents two colorways, “Pink/Green” and “Purple/White,” and “AM97” features a black monochrome theme accented by tonal blue-and-white channels along the upper. “AM 90 SE” brightens up the collection with neon green accents and a demarcated Swoosh.
