Balenciaga's Latest Object Is a $7,290 USD Runner Sneaker Sculpture
Limited to 20 editions.
Fresh from the grand opening of its new London flagship store, Balenciaga has turned its attention back to making objects for your home with its latest offering, the Runner sneaker sculpture.
Based on an EU 42-sized Runner — which was one of Balenciaga’s key footwear styles of 2021 — this life-sized, hand-crafted, inflexible piece is made from glazed porcelain ceramic and weighs 1.4kg. Made in Switzerland in a limited run of just 20 editions, the piece is carved by hand before being fired, painted using a traditional Italian maiolica technique to add worn-out details, and then fired again.
Like the real sneaker, layered sports textures, distressed fabric edges, exposed stitching, and intentionally-bubbling technical adhesive design elements grace the sculpture all around. From afar, it doesn’t even look like a sculpture, which might indicate why this incredibly limited piece costs $7,290 USD — almost seven times more than the $1,150 USD real deal.
The sculpture is available to buy from Balenciaga’s stores in Beijing, Beverly Hills, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Monaco, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo, as well as online. Take a closer look at the sculpture above.
