Apple TV Plus Becomes First Streamer to Win Best Picture at the Oscars
‘CODA’ also took home Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Apple TV+ has made history as the first streaming service to take home an Oscar for Best Picture with its coming-of-age comedy-drama CODA. The film follows Ruby Rossi, played by Emilia Jones, who navigates the world as the only hearing member in a deaf family and attempts to establish a life for herself outside of her home.
Additionally, CODA‘s Troy Kotsure won Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar since his co-star Marlee Matlin took home Best Actress for her role in Children of a Lesser God in 1986, and writer-director Siân Heder took home Best Adapted Screenplay.
Apple CEO Tim Cook took to Twitter to share the news, writing, “Team CODA created a profoundly beautiful movie, a story of hope and heart that celebrates our differences.”

Several streaming services have previously been nominated for the highly-esteemed category, though none have ever taken home the trophy. Amazon was the first streamer to receive a nomination in the category with Manchester by the Sea in 2017, though Moonlight won the award that year.
Meanwhile, Netflix has also received several nods in the category with Roma, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7, along with Don’t Look Up and The Power of the Dog during this year’s ceremony. Netflix received the most nominations at the 2022 Oscars, with 27 total, though the streamer only took home Best Director for Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog.
