Shaun White Announces Retirement After Beijing Olympics
The snowboard legend is a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
The 35-year-old snowboarding great, Shaun White has officially announced that he will be retiring from the sport after the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
White, who is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, won his first halfpipe gold in 2006 at the Torino Games and also took home the gold in Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018. The Beijing Games this month will mark the athlete’s fifth and final Olympics, which he has confirmed in a press conference,
“This has all had its amazing glow as I’ve decided this will be my last Olympics. I’ve given it my all, there have been some ups and downs on the way to get here. And with that I feel I’ve got stronger and better.
I’m just so excited about everything. Opening ceremony was incredible. The venue looks incredible. I’m just enjoying every single moment.”
He also alluded that his performance in Beijing will likely be his final one, as he often takes the season after the Olympic Games off, “After the Olympics I don’t compete much … as there’s so much pressure weighing on you and that relief is warranted. I usually take the season off to get excited again, but this will be my last competition.” White has also added that the injuries he has racked up over time, including ankle, knee and back issues were “little signs” that led him to this decision towards the end of 2021.
Going into the 2022 Beijing Games, White feels quite confident about his prospects and is said to be excited to take in his final Olympics appearance.
