Universal has shared a first look image for Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming biopic Oppenheimer, which sees Cillian Murphy star as the atomic bomb father J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The forthcoming film, which is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triump and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kair Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, has begun production in New Mexico. The movie will be shot using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography, along with sections in IMAX black-and-white analog film.

Plot details have not yet been disclosed, however the film will chronicle the life of Oppenheimer, who was a physicist integral to the Manhattan Project.

Aside from Nolan, the cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Michael Angarano, Kenneth Branagh, Alden Ehrenreich and David Krumholtz. Nolan is producing the film with Emma Thomas and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven.

“Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas’ films have shattered the limits of what cinematic storytelling can achieve,” Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be working alongside them on this exceptional and extraordinary project and are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience.”

Oppenheimer will premiere in theaters on July 21, 2023. See the first-look image featuring Murphy in the titular role above.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Patrick Stewart has responded to Doctor Strange 2 trailer rumors.
