Take a Closer Look at Balenciaga's Medieval Battle-Ready Chevalier Derby
1066 meets 2022.
Demna is full of inspiration and references, but for Fall 2021, nobody expected Balenciaga to serve medieval battle-chic. As seen during the dystopian runway video, looks were ornamental and centered around shoes — specifically medieval-styled boots — as well as this pair of shoes, the Chevalier Derby.
Showcased by a Balenciaga fan on Instagram, the Chevalier Derby is made from laser-cut leather and has been given a painted and polished finish to replicate armor. The leather is shaped into spiked overlapping layers on the vamp, while small rivets have also been reinterpreted to make the pair look as if they’re hand-made by a blacksmith in the middle ages.
A square toe has been added for a contemporary touch, while a leather strap around the heel continues the 1066 theme. In terms of concrete information, the Instagram user @myfacewheno_o said that the pair retails for “$2,650 in [the] USA once you factor in tax,” and when responding to a question about their comfort, the user said “0%.”
