Steven Ma's Architecturally-Informed Chelsea Boots, Loafers and Mary Janes Drop at Machine-A
Stavros Karelis’ London concept store continues to support emerging designers.
Steven Ma‘s eponymous label might be in its infancy, but that’s exactly how Stavros Karelis of Machine-A likes it. Known for spotlighting and launching new names in the fashion industry, Machine-A has announced it is the exclusive stockist of steven ma “Collection No. 1,” bringing heeled Chelsea boots, mary janes and loafers to London’s fashion crowd.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Ma draws from trauma in their life and their rebellious streak to create footwear that goes against traditional norms. His emotions are translated into shoes that subvert stereotypical expectations, resulting in heeled boots for men and styles that add futuristic twists to classic silhouettes.
Gender fluidity runs throughout Ma’s work, as men’s dress shoes inform the women’s heels and the same can be said the other way around. The boots are a particular standout, appearing in sage green, white, black, camel-brown suede, patent chromatic black, and baby blue, with all sporting the brand’s signature double-stacked sole unit that is inspired by architecture.
Elsewhere, crystalline structures also play a part in this inspiration of the heel, elevated by the natural stones that are used throughout the collection, specifically seen on the bag that uses sections of lapis.
Chelsea boots continue to wow with their extended sole, giving the silhouette a border on the bottom, before they extend beyond traditional lengths up the leg and sport a heel tab as a final adornment. The loafers also intrigue thanks to their matching sculptural heel and the diagonal overlapping straps on the vamp and their deep-cut collar that also contradicts conventions.
