Dior's Pre-Fall 2023 Collection Was a Celestial Journey Through Egyptian Sand Dunes

Turning models into desert warriors pulled from a futuristic universe.

Kim Jones is nothing short of an innovator, helming Dior Homme since 2018 and constantly delivering otherworldly collections that reinterpret the house’s classic styles into something new.

For Spring/Summer 2023, Dior teamed up with ERL’s Eli Russell Linnetz for a range submerged in California cool — but for Pre-Fall 2023, Jones takes a trip to Egypt’s Giza Pyramids in the nation’s capital city, Cairo.

The collection celebrates Jones’ affinity for travel, having grown up in Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Ghana throughout childhood. Using the Great Pyramids as a mystical backdrop, the designer pushes the ancient structures into the future with a contemporary range that saw models become desert warriors.

Thumping techno music kicked antics off and set the tone for the thrilling scenes that followed. Illuminated corridors guided models through sandy walkways ornamented in lightweight fabrics that shielded them from the powdery breeze that crept into the sky.

Sleek two-piece sets were delivered in neutral tones accompanied by delicate blazers, floor-length shawls, and strands of tulle that drifted in the air with a celestial essence. These swung back and forth, clinging to slouchy trousers matched with rhinestone-encrusted tops and sheer organza anoraks, melding into protective face shields worn overhead.

Refined suiting, draped knitwear, and billowing bomber jackets followed, accessorized with double-layered buckle belts, kangaroo-style hand warmers, and clear helmets for increased security against the desert winds. Dashes of yellow and orange hop from look to look, illuminating the otherwise muted offering pulled from another planet.

Geometric chest guards fit for combat walked next to zippered trench coats, graphic knit tees, and snakeskin outerwear, while wicker baskets turned into backpacks and adventure-ready footwear was strapped tight for the uncertain journey ahead.
