Apple Is Compensating MacBook Users With Butterfly Keyboards

A happy ending to the “Butterfly Keyboard Saga.”

From 2015 to 2019, Apple looked to upgrade its laptops with the butterfly keyboard. Unfortunately, the low-travel keyboard plagued users with a series of issues when typing. The design utilized across MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and MacBook Pros was prone to accumulating dust and debris, resulting in sticky keys and double-press inputs.

Before eventually returning to its favored established keyboard design, Apple implemented a new membrane and launched a limited-warranty-free repair program for users with butterfly keyboard MacBooks. Users unhappy with the response to the design flaw pushed for seven states in the United States to file class action lawsuits against the tech company. Although never issuing an official stance in the case alleging it sold defective products, Apple agree to a $50 million USD payout.

Now 2015-2019 MacBook users affected by the butterfly keyboard in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, or Washington can claim compensation. It is important to note, users must have had their MacBooks repaired by a certified Apple repair shop. According to the terms, users will be contacted directly by Apple and are eligible for $50, $125, or $395 USD depending on if the keycaps were replaced, the whole keyboard was replaced, or replaced more than once.

If you have not been contacted, you can contact the legal firms behind the class action lawsuits at keyboardsettlement.com in the coming weeks.
