With Design Miami in full swing, it’s hard to keep up with all the brilliant pieces that have debuted in the sun-drenched state — but some stand out from a mile away, like Harry Nuriev‘s latest work, “The Trash Bag Sofa.”

Trash bags have become the de facto commentary on capitalism as of late, and outside of the world of fashion it seems the humble disposal device could be heading into your home — and not just to line your bin. Under the studying of “spectacular mundane,” Nuriev asks his onlookers “if it’s all even worth buying in the first place. (Treasure or trash?),” while working with unconventional, discarded materials alongside the concept of giving a product a second life to produce pieces such as this sofa.

Drawing upon notions of the Italian Radical Design movement, the sofa sports a construction comprising 15 bags that have been stitched together to create an almost natural formation, as if trash has been placed on the street rather neatly. Stuffed with foam, the bags are in fact crafted out of leather — despite the piece being finished in the quintessential glossy black trash bag look.

Speaking on the piece, the designer said, “With ‘The Trash Bag Sofa,’ I was interested in separating the visual qualities of an object from the object itself, transforming it into something that transcends how it is perceived.”
