Issey Miyake's "In the Making" Exhibition Explores the Thought Behind Creativity and Design
Showing throughout Milan Design Week 2021.
Issey Miyake is celebrating creativity during this year’s Milan Design Week by exhibiting a special in-store installation titled “In the Making.”
Enlisting designers, artists, and other creatives, Issey Miyake puts the spotlight on its new brands IM MEN and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE to better show the design-based and creative processes that go into producing the products. Looking inside the company, “In the Making” explores the ways Issey Miyake breaks the boundaries of design and why it approaches fashion production in the way it does.
More specifically, Issey Miyake is known for creating garments that follow function before form, subsequently making pieces that are well-suited for the wearer’s lifestyle. It’s this that likens its clothes to a product, or as the brand puts it, they are “items [that are] realized for the utility in everyday living, made possible by thorough investigations into design and making, from the drawing board to the store.”
The curated exhibition displays the thinking behind Issey Miyake IM MEN — known for its packable and transportable “Convertible” series. Here, we get to understand and see how pieces such as the coat and jacket utilize a yoke to turn into a carryable piece of clothing, or how the convertible blouson can be carried around the wearer’s back.
As for A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, “In the Making” looks at the raw materials that can be used to create fabrics. This label is known for experimentation — especially with materials — as it is currently exploring the rice husk-constructed fabric Triporous. Elsewhere on show is TADANORI YOKOO ISSEY MIYAKE, as well as pieces made in collaboration with the Italian entrepreneur and art director Fabio Bellotti whose artwork has informed new IM MEN and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE pieces.
