Citroën to Launch Its Electric AMI City Car in the U.K.

Back in May, the French automotive company Citroën entered and simultaneously changed the electric city car market with the launch of its AMI electric car. Now, the AMI is heading to the U.K.

The AMI is a small two-seater EV that’s perfect for city commutes as it comes with a range of 46 miles and a top speed of 28 MPH, powered by a 5.5kWh battery that can recharge in just three hours. It is completely emissions-free, meaning it complies with central London’s congestion and ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) charges, meaning you won’t have to pay any fees to drive it around town.

However, driving it around town might actually throw up a few challenges. While adaptors and plug sockets will be converted to U.K. specifications, the AMI will remain left-hand-drive, as opposed to the right-hand-drive cars that are found in the U.K., as a result making it slightly harder to navigate than usual. However, Citroën thinks this is a benefit, as it means drivers will be able to exit the AMI curb-side, avoiding the need to open the driver’s door to oncoming traffic.

Over 13,000 people registered an interest in the AMI, hence its soon-coming arrival in the U.K. next spring, and for those interested, you can put down a deposit of just £250 GBP (approx. $341 USD) to secure yours now. No word has been said on how the AMI be sold, as in other European countries it can be rented on a monthly basis or bought outright.
