Daniel Arsham Takes Us on a Joyride in "Turning Wrenches" Exhibition

Highlighting cars from movies like ‘Bullitt,’ ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and ‘Back to the Future.’

Following his presentation of “Drawings” for Perrotin Viewing Salon, New York-based artist Daniel Arsham is keeping a steady pace as he announces an upcoming solo exhibition with Library Street Collective Gallery.

The show entitled “Turning Wrenches” pays tribute to the Detroit automotive industry and global car culture based on his longtime fascination for automobiles with a specific emphasis on Porsches. Arsham produced a replica of his restored 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo, which was re-interpreted as a Porsche 930A for the exhibition as he connects his art with his history and abstractions of memory.

Detailed 1:3 scale replicas of cars and automobile artifacts rev up the show, with a spotlight on cars featured in some of his treasured films such as a scaled 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt, a Ferrari from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a bronze DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future which embodies the concept of time in the artist’s lifetime works.

The car sculptures feature his iconic eroded formations that give way to crystals taking place, which speak on the beauty of natural evolution and decomposition within time. Arsham also injects automobile and film posters into the exhibition that follows the eroded, crystallized fashion along with a vintage gas pump and eroded Mobil Pegasus sculpture.

“Turning Wrenches” is set to open from June 25 to August 7 at Library Street Collective.
