Watch the 'Battlefield 2042' Reveal Trailer
Featuring state-of-the-art combat tools and new 128-player multiplayer modes.
Electronic Arts and developer DICE shared an official trailer for the latest addition to the Battlefield series, dubbed Battlefield 2042, on Wednesday.
The franchise’s official Twitter account shared a YouTube link on Tuesday that counted down to a livestream on June 9 at 11 a.m. EDT to debut the new gameplay.
Rather than employing a far-reaching, sci-fi landscape, Battlefield 2042 will be set in the near future with a relatively realistic approach. Players will take on characters called “Specialists,” who will be equipped with their own unique trait and specialty with fully customizable loadouts. Rid of spaceships and laser guns, the new visual reveals a slew of contemporary combat tools, including futuristic hovercrafts, state-of-the-art fighter jets and high-tech drones.
The five-minute video showcases large-scale warfare with massive maps that support up to 128 players at one time, although last-generation consoles will cap at 64 players. The new game omits a traditional single-player campaign and instead places a heavy emphasis on multiplayer modes, DICE manager Oskar Gabrielson confirmed to Games Radar.
In lieu of the usual solo component, there will be at least three multiplayer modes, including All-Out Warfare, which enlists Battlefield‘s signature gameplay with larger maps and more players, as well as “Hazard Zone” and an unnamed iteration. Hazard Zone offers a high-stakes, team-based gameplay that is “a modern take on the multiplayer experience” and “very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes,” according to a release. The third experience, still to be announced, is a “love letter to Battlefield fans and one that long-time players will feel right at home with.”
Battlefield 2042 will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X on October 22, with editions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One landing the same day.
