Watch the trailer for Sega's 'Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown'
Releasing on June 1 exclusively on PlayStation 4.
Sega on Tuesday released the trailer for Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, the latest installment of its Virtua Fighter series of arcade fighting games.
The newest game will be a PlayStation 4 console exclusive and includes updated character models, stages and cinematics in high definition. Gamers can compete with up to 16 players in online modes, including “Tournaments” and “League,” or can experience the classic arcade game play in modes like “Ranked Match,” “Arcade,” “Training,” and “Versus.”
The trailer shows the evolution of the game and the return of classic characters like Akira, Pai, Kage and Wolf, along with more recently introduced characters like Eileen and El Blaze. The newest iteration of the game is set to release worldwide on June 1 and was co-developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio alongside Sega.
“Challenge the greatest fighters in the world in the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter, now featuring gorgeous HD graphics, new online features, and all the bone-crunching, martial arts combat of the renowned original,” a description for the newest Virtua Fighter game states. “Master your fighting style to defeat all challengers in the Fifth World Fighting Tournament and become a Virtua Fighter legend!”
The game first debuted in arcades in 1993 and set the pace for future 3D fighting games like Tekken. Widely-considered to be the first polygon-based fighting game, Virtua Fighter has spawned several spinoffs over the years, including an RPG, an anime series and a manga adaptation.
Virtua Fighter is the latest game in Sega’s reported plans to reboot its old titles, including Jet Set, Crazy Taxi, Panzer Dragoon and Shinobi, among others.
