Charles Oliveira Defeats Michael Chandler to Claim New UFC Lightweight Title
After surviving a testing first round.

After 11 years in the UFC, Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira has defeated Michael Chandler for the vacant Lightweight title. The Brazilian submission specialist, who has been winning equally as much with striking, was faced with insane adversity in the first round against a hungry Michael Chandler where he was hit with a surprising guillotine choke and then later downed by a powerful right hand. He was eventually able to survive the first round in guard. The second was where the magic happened for Oliveira as he took the fight to Chandler and clipped him with a left hand which ultimately led to Chandler’s defeat 19 seconds into the round. Many are commending Oliveira’s tenacity for being able to survive Chandler’s power experienced in the first round.
The Houston, Texas crowd of 16,000 for UFC 262 also sadly witnessed Tony Ferguson‘s third loss in a row as he lost to Beneil Dariush. This match predominantly saw Dariush controlling Ferguson on the ground and he even had him in a secure heel hook that would have had many other fighters tapping. Dariush won by unanimous decision where he went on to call out Elon Musk for his delayed Tesla order.
Other highlights include Andre Muniz’s arm-breaking submission on veteran Jacare Souza, and Shane Burgos’ delayed knockout by Edson Barboza. This UFC event also saw an increase for the Performance of the Night bonus thanks to Ferguson’s comments at the press conference. The customary $50,000 USD has been bumped up to $75,000 USD.
