Nintendo announced on Wednesday that Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the series’ first action and RPG game, will be released on January 28, 2022.

Developed by Game Freak, the new edition honors past Pokémon games while introducing new gameplay elements. According to Nintendo, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to deliver a more “immersive” experience.

“Explore natural expanses to catch Pokémon by learning their behavior, sneaking up, and throwing a well-aimed Poké Ball,” a description of the upcoming Nintendo Switch game reads. “You can also toss the Poké Ball containing your ally Pokémon near a wild Pokémon to seamlessly enter battle. This new angle on Pokémon gameplay will deliver an immersive, personal experience brought to life by both Pokémon and humans.”

According to the game’s official site, the story takes place in a “long-gone era” before the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl games. Gameplay takes place in the Sinnoh region, which is described in this edition as being home to “Pokémon living wild in harsh environments.” To begin the adventure of creating the region’s first Pokédex, users can choose to partner with one of three Pokémon that arrived with a Pokémon Professor: Rowlet, a Grass/Flying creature, Cyndaquil, a Fire type, or Oshawott, a Water type that resembles a sea otter.

At the center of the game’s lore is the Pokémon known as Arceus, who is described as having “shaped all there is in this world.”

The game is priced at $59.99 USD and is available for preorder at select retailers.
