A week on from the failed launch of the European Super League, the fallout continues to be felt at a number of major football clubs. Amongst protest at Arsenal‘s current ownership — sparked by joining the breakaway league — Spotify founder Daniel Ek has launched an attempt to take over the club.

Currently, Arsenal is owned by the Kroenke family through its Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) group, who have controlled the London-based club since 2011 and took full ownership in 2018. It is believed the Kroenkes value the club at around £2 billion GBP (approximately $2.75 billion USD), although it is unclear if they would consider selling even if this figure is met. Daniel Ek has a personal fortune of £3.4 billion GBP (approximately $4.725 billion USD) and sources believe he would have no issue raising the funds necessary.

The Swedish entrepreneur first declared his interest in acquiring the club on April 23, saying, “As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I’d be happy to throw my hat into the ring.” This process has now started, and Ek has bolstered his credentials by recruiting three Arsenal legends, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp, to assist with his approach.

In other sports news, Real Madrid’s president claims the clubs “can’t leave” the European Super League.
