Sony’s PlayStation5 is getting its first major software update on Wednesday, enhancing the console’s storage, personalization and social features.

Sony executive Hideaki Nishino announced the updates in a blog post on Tuesday, saying that the global rollout was “packed with new features and improvements.” Notably, the update will expand the PS5’s storage and management capabilities, allowing gamers to transfer PS5 games from the console’s internal storage to an external USB drive.

“It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play,” Nishino said, adding that the titles cannot be played from the external USB storage.

The updates also include new social features for PS4 and PS5. Users of both consoles can now Share Play together, meaning that gamers can share their screens or virtually pass their controllers across the gaming systems. There will also be upgrades made to the Game Base menu, a dedicated hangout space for a close network of gamers, and improvements to the console’s personalization settings.

The PlayStation App will also get a reboot in the latest round of updates, making remote connectivity to the consoles easier.

Sony has unveiled several major enhancements to the PS5 gaming experience in recent weeks. Last month, the Japanese gaming giant revealed its next-gen VR controller for the PS5, a step towards creating a deeper sense of immersion for its users.
