Producers of this year’s Academy Awards have insisted the ceremony remains an in-person event while stating Zoom will “not be an option” for attendees.

The event will be split between two venues — Union Station and Dolby Theater — and will be limited to just nominees, presenters and their guests. Each attendee is required to get tested and a COVID-19 safety team will watch over the event. Producers Steven Soderbergh, Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher said in a statement, “there will not be an option to Zoom in for the show. We are going to great lengths to provide a safe and ENJOYABLE evening for all of you in person, as well as for all the millions of film fans around the world, and we feel the virtual thing will diminish those efforts.”

This announcement arrives in a time where TV viewership for award shows, like the Golden Globes and the Grammy’s, have nose-dived to the smallest amount in decades.
