Arashi Yanagawa’s John Lawrence Sullivan continues mining suit style for Fall/Winter 2021, interrupting the trim silhouettes with occasional punk flair or streetwear accent. Further challenging the stiffness of conventional tailoring, Yanagawa’s peer Takahiro Miyashita provided the styling the for collection, even contributing some of his new eyewear to the proceedings, which are inspired directly by militaristic uniforms and battlewear.
Fresh from his own Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo presentation, Miyashita mixes some of the season’s simpler pieces with its more complex, shoving collared shirts and ties beneath “PROTECTED” tees and contrasting “HARDCORED” sweaters and sleek suit pants against leather aprons and harness vests. Flak jacket-like closure, quilted layers, slit-armed sweaters and heavy square-toed shoes reinforce the utilitarian motif, offsetting boxy double-breasted blazers with unexpected zippers and balaclavas.
John Lawrence Sullivan’s web store and stockists will receive FW21 later this year, after TheSoloist. drops its new glasses elsewhere.
