Reed Art DepartmentJeff Staple‘s creative agency — and custom furniture outfit Parc have teamed up to craft gradient leather-equipped takes on the famous Eames lounge chair. First introduced by Ray Eames and Charles Eames in 1956, the Eames lounge chair and its accompanying ottoman have long been held aloft as quintessential pieces of mid-century modern design. RAD and Parc have left this classic ethos mostly intact, but given it a little updated flair by way of a custom gradient on the chair and ottoman’s leather.

This gradient starts with a dark gray on the chair’s headrest, back and seat before gradually fading to white on the ottoman. According to RAD, this is “[inspired by] New York City asphalt and visual interplay between buildings and concrete in the early morning fog.” Each piece of leather is held steady by a rich stained wood shell with orange trim and matching wooden buttons.

The chair is also accompanied by a RAD x Parc long-sleeve tee, one with a colorful back graphic that references a short film produced by Charles and Ray Eames in 1953 for Georgia’s Department of Arts. The inspiration behind this film resonates with the Reed Art Department team: it was meant to advocate for the interweaving of various design disciplines from architects to designers and engineers, an ethos that RAD says is a “direct parallel” to how it approaches its work.

Look for Reed Art Department and Parc’s custom Eames lounge chair to release on February 11 at the Reed Art Department webstore. The chair and ottoman combo is limited to only three units and priced at $10,000 USD, while the tee arrives at $60 USD.
