NVIDIA Throttles Crypto Mining Speeds on the RTX 3060 to Avoid Supply Shortages
It’ll introduce a new line of dedicated mining cards instead.
Following a surge in GPU prices and stock shortages for past releases, NVIDIA is now hoping to get more of its graphics cards into the hands of gamers instead of crypto miners by throttling hash rates on its upcoming RTX 3060.
To do so, NVIDIA is introducing new driver software that can detect algorithms used in Ethereum mining and cut down the card’s hash rate by half, hoping to decrease demand from miners in order to avoid supply shortages. For those who were looking forward to the new GPU for crypto mining, however, you’ll still have options available. To make up for the RTX 3060, the tech company has now announced a new line of chips called Crypto Mining Processors (CMPs) which are designed specifically for the job. They won’t have any graphics capabilities and display outputs but have been created to optimize mining performance and efficiency through improved airflow, and lower peak core voltage and frequency.
“We are gamers, through and through. We obsess about new gaming features, new architectures, new games and tech. We designed GeForce GPUs for gamers, and gamers are clamoring for more,” says a statement from the company. “With the launch of GeForce RTX 3060 on Feb. 25, we’re taking an important step to help ensure GeForce GPUs end up in the hands of gamers.”
