Netflix Prepares New Balance 550 Customs Created Using Meteor Fragments
Launching at Sotheby’s to mark the release of ‘Don’t Look Up.’
To mark the arrival of Don’t Look Up, Netflix has partnered with Manchester-based sneaker customizer MattB Customs to create a unique pair of New Balance 550s. Each pair incorporates fragments of the Seymchan meteorite that was discovered in the Magadan District of Russia, and has been dated to 4.5 billion years ago.
34 sections of this meteorite are added to the grey and white colorway of the 550, with its “N” logo and a section of the side panel adorned with the pieces. Other features nod to the meteorite and Don’t Look Up, including a metallic lace lock with a latticework design called a “Widmanstätten pattern” that is created as a meteorite cools over millions of years.
The Seymchan meteorite has been chosen for this project due to its similarities to the fictional Dibiasky Comet, which sits at the center of the Don’t Look Up plot.
One pair of the custom New Balance 550s will release via the Sotheby’s “Buy Now” feature on December 17, on offer for £10,000 GBP. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the WWF to help reduce human impact on the environment.
