TNT confirmed the renewal for a third season of Snowpiercer just under a week before the second season is set to air on January 25 on Netflix. The first season launched only in May 2020.
Based on the graphic novel and 2013 film, Snowpiercer, the series is set seven years after the world becomes a frozen wasteland. The show follows a series of characters as they navigate the new normal, inhabiting a perpetually moving train that circles the globe endlessly. The series features big names such as Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs and Sean Bean.
The show has had a long, tumultuous route to the streaming platform having first put into development in 2015. The pilot was ordered for 2016, but the series was not until 2018. The pilot’s original director, Scott Derrickson did not return for pilot reshoots, thus pushing back production once again. In 2018, James Hawes came on board to direct all reshoots and subsequently the rest of the series once it was brought back from TBS to TNT in October of 2019.
The Snowpiercer series is currently produced by the same companies, Tomorrow Studios, and CJ Entertainment, that also produced the original film. Graeme Manson, who wrote the series’ first episode, will return as showrunner for the second season. Other details regarding the return of the third season have yet to be announced.
Season 2 of Snowpiercer premieres on January 25 on Netflix.
