Perhaps due to a craving for the comforts of nostalgia, the inexplicable demand for vintage trading cards continues to rise as the sun sets on 2020. Heritage Auctions is now vying to match the high water mark left by Goldin Auctions’ shocking $369,000 USD Pokémon Trading Card Game Charizard with covetable cards that include three first edition Charizards, one of which has been granted the PSA GEM MT 10 rating, denoting it utterly flawless.

Heritage Auctions expects the card to bring in at least $350,000 USD by the time its auction ends on January 14, coming close to the record-setting card sold earlier this month. Arguably the Pokémon TCG’s most desirable collectible at the moment, this “Charizard #4 First-Edition Base Set Rare Hologram” card is one of only 2,627 copies certified by the card grading authorities at the PSA. Its GEM-MT 10 (Gem Mint) rating ensures that it’s a visually perfect card, freed from creasing and staining. Furthermore, its original gloss is wholly intact and — crucially — the printed Charizard image is neatly centered.

Though the auction offers one clear standout, there are plenty of other attractive items in store, including first-edition Venasaur, also from 1999 and in Mint 9 condition, and a first-edition sealed Fossil booster box. Each is already bidding at over $2,600 USD with nearly two weeks to go until the auctions’ end.

“This is an incredible card, one that collectors have been chasing to make the centerpiece of their collections,” said Heritage Auctions assistant comics & comic art operations supervisor Jesus Garcia in a statement. “The demand and prices paid for this card are sky-high, especially in this condition. It is an absolute must-have for the most serious of collectors.”
