South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group — which currently consists of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis — has just announced that it will be launching a new car brand named IONIQ, solely dedicated to manufacturing battery-powered electric cars. The name itself is based on the current Hyundai Ioniq model, which used the word at the time for simply identifying the development project which ultimately led to the hybrid car.
The group says that it currently has three cars already planned for release over the next four years. Naming them simply with numbers, the brand says that odd-numbered models will be crossovers and SUVs, while the even numbers will be sedans. Currently planned for 2021, the IONIQ 5 will be the first to arrive, and comes in the form of a mid-sized crossover based on the Hyundai 45 concept. The IONIQ 6 will follow in 2022, and will be a sedan based on the Prophecy Concept. Finally, the IONIQ 7 — a larger electric SUV — will arrive in 2024. All of these cars will utilize the company’s future E-GMP electric vehicle platform, which the brand has described as a feature that “will allow Hyundai to reimagine the vehicle interiors as a ‘smart living space’ with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glove box designed as drawers.”
Electric car enthusiasts should definitely be on the lookout when the IONIQ 5 is revealed in 2021.
Elsewhere in the automotive world, Bentley has just unveiled its 2021 Bentayga Speed SUV.
