Jorja Smith returns today with the new lead single off of Roc Nation’s upcoming Reprise project, titled “By Any Means.” The bittersweet ballad unpacks the energy today that surrounds a larger civil rights movement and offers encouragement to stand together and fight. Smith is no stranger to speaking out about social issues in her music. Back in 2016, her hit “Blue Lights” spoke to police brutality, while her recent music video for “Rose Rogue” is a compilation of photographs and footage from Black Lives Matter protests.

The track opens with operatic sounds and transitions into a catchy flow that addresses the history of lies and pain that has led to this particular moment. “The inspiration behind ‘By Any Means’ really came from going to the Black Lives Matter protest and leaving thinking, what can I do to keep this conversation going?” Smith said. “It’s not just a post on social media, it’s life.” Cowritten and produced by Ezrah Roberts-Grey, the empowering track allows Smith to share her experience as a Black woman actualizing the change in the world. “I take pride in the things that we’ve done/Side by side in the revolution,” she sings. “Won’t stay silent for things that I love.”

Reprise is a collection of songs curated by Roc Nation that unites multiple artists and lets their voices be heard in musical protest. The project aims to bring awareness to social justice issues. As a result, a portion of proceeds will go to funding organizations that support victims of police brutality, hate crimes and other violations of civil rights.

Stream “By Any Means” below and expect Roc Nation’s forthcoming Reprise project to drop soon.
