Billie Eilish seemed to be having an unstoppable 2020. After winning five GRAMMY awards in January, performing at the Academy Awards in February, and releasing the theme tune for the next James Bond movie, the musician was looking ahead to a sold-out, worldwide arena tour this summer.

Then COVID-19 happened. Days into the North American leg of her tour, the entire programme was postponed indefinitely as a result of global lockdowns. The tour’s title, WHERE DO WE GO?, had an apposite sense of irony.

Reflecting on the instability of the last few months, Eilish has returned with her latest single, “my future.” Written and recorded during lockdown, the song is a meditation on self-sufficiency: its lyrics include the lines “I know supposedly I’m lonely now / Know I’m supposed to be unhappy without someone / But aren’t I someone?”

In an email to her fans, Eilish said

“We wrote this at the very beginning of quarantine. it’s a song that’s really really personal and special to me. when we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited and a craaaazy amount of self reflection and self growth. but recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what’s happening in the world now. i hope you can all find meaning in it for yourselves.”

The release is accompanied by an animated video, made in collaboration with the artist Andrew Onorato, which features an animated version of Eilish walking through a rain-soaked forest before emerging into sunlight.

“my future” is available to stream now on Spotify.
