In light of current social distancing and lockdown regulations, its been unfortunate that many Pride parades around the world have been canceled or postponed, but in the hopes to continuing celebrating LGBT+, media company We Are Social have teamed up with Global Pride — the first-ever worldwide Pride event — to promote virtual celebrations using none other than the hottest video game right now: Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Building its own Pride-themed island, including specially-skinned furniture, outfits and flags, We Are Social is hoping to encourage players all across the globe to celebrate the event on their own islands. “With the cancellation of physical Pride events around the world, we wanted to provide a way for people to be able to participate in celebrations wherever they are,” innovations director Arnaud Robin told Forbes. “Pride is an important event for many – often, it gives hope, as well as a sense of community and belonging. There was a thriving LGBTI+ community on Animal Crossing already, so it was the perfect opportunity for this to happen.”

The director hopes that these virtual celebrations can also be a gateway for those who have never previously attended Pride events to join: “Digital events like this allow us to reach so many people in the safety of their own space. Many of whom may not have had the chance to experience Pride before due to any number of reasons.”

“In this period when communities around the world remain separated as a result of lockdowns, #GlobalPrideCrossing provides a common safe space for people of any gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity who are part of LGBT+ and ally communities to celebrate Pride,” emphasized the company.

To join in on the celebrations or potentially visit We Are Social’s own island, stay tuned to the organization’s Twitter.

Elsewhere in gaming, Cyberpunk 2077 has once again been delayed.
