Coronavirus Forces Baselworld Postponement
A first in 102 years.
The threat of the Coronavirus has officially put an end to this year’s Baselworld. This news comes just weeks after Bulgari announced its withdrawal from the annual Watch and jewellery trade show.
Dating back to 1917, Baselworld has historically been held every year without interruption, even through World War II, and through 2003’s scare from the SARSr-CoV species of coronavirus. With the rising number of infected civilians, the Swiss government is not taking any chances, especially with the number of international exhibitors. While it is disappointing that the event will not be taking place this year, a new official date for Baselworld 2021 has been announced with the month moved from April 30 to January 28. Baselworld managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff comments: “By postponing the show to January 2021, we have found a solution that enables the industry and all our customers to avoid losing a full year and at the same time reset their calendars for the beginning of the year, a period that is conducive to the presentation of their new products, new trends and order taking.”
