Mads Mikkelsen Reportedly in Talks to Replace Johnny Depp in 'Fantastic Beasts'
The ‘Hannibal’ and ‘Death Stranding’ actor is supposedly the first choice.

Mads Mikkelsen is reportedly being considered as the replacement for Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Sources claim that the Danish actor, best known for his work on Hannibal and Hideo Kojima‘s Death Stranding, is “in early talks” for the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Fantastic Beasts 3 director David Yates and his team are aiming to stay on schedule for a Summer 2020 release, and Mikkelsen is supposedly the first replacement choice of the filmmaker.
Depp played Gellert Grindelwald in the 2018 flick The Crimes of Grindelwald and was recently asked by Warner Bros. to resign from the franchise despite signing a five-picture deal. The shocking move from Warner Bros. — which has since been criticized by fans — stemmed from Depp’s loss of the legal battle between him and a British tabloid that labelled him as a “wife beater” in reference to his turbulent relationship with Amber Heard. The actor was supposedly asked to depart after one day of shooting, but new reports state that Depp will still receive his full eight-figure salary.
Elsewhere in entertainment, A Quiet Place is receiving a spinoff but will not be directed by creator John Krasinski.
