Having collaborated with artists as diverse as Raymond Pettibon and Shawn Stussy, Kim Jones continues to develop Dior‘s artist partnerships by enlisting legendary New York artist Kenny Scharf for Pre-Fall 2021, WWD reports. In line with Dior’s previous joint efforts, Scharf’s colorfully surreal work will grace a variety of men’s ready-to-wear goods, accessories and footwear.
Scharf’s cartoonish illustrations brought him into the spotlight around the same time as contemporaries like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and RAMMELLZEE, as ’80s street art began to venture into the realm of galleries, museums and happenings. The collaboration is indicative of Jones’ taste for artists that are in vogue in contemporary art scenes but also enjoy a youthful following. Of course, Judy Blame‘s following likely differs greatly from that of KAWS and Hajime Sorayama but they, like Scharf, succeed in delivering that marketable crossover appeal that has denoted Jones’ work for Dior.
In particular, Scharf has proven himself to be no stranger to that middle ground between accessible and elevated, having worked with street-leaning labels like The Hundreds and Heron Preston in recent months, and brands as diverse as ZARA and G-SHOCK in the past. Meanwhile, Scharf has continued to showcase new works in a variety of imaginative spaces, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pre-Fall 2020 collection will debut December 8 on Dior’s website, commemorated with an event in Beijing shortly after.
Jones, meanwhile, recently busied himself with a new set of collaborative Air Max 95 sneakers.
