Hiroshi Fujiwara‘s personal style is far more subdued than the collaborative goods issued under his fragment design imprint, restrained enough to only include mostly unbranded neutral-toned garments. As such, Fujiwara’s collaborations with John Smedleylike the one earlier this year — are more of a passion project than usual, with the Japanese designer aiming to create something familiar, yet distinct, a perfect complement to his already-extensive Smedley wardrobe.

The latest fragment design x John Smedley offering is launching just in time for cooler temperatures and is appropriately more seasonal than Fujiwara’s beloved T-shirts. A four-piece set of sweatshirts has been arranged in the fragment mastermind’s preferred tones of black, navy, white and grey, elevated by quiet touches of sportswear.

These accents range from gathered waist and sleeve hems to elegant side seam ribbing to a v-insert below the collar. As usual, they’re crafted from Smedley’s signature Sea Island Cotton, an ultra-soft woven textile that has made Smedley a sartorial essential for decades, and finished with a co-branded, heritage-inspired neck tag.

“I was like, please let me [work on this shirt model], I’m going to be buying it anyway,” Fujiwara told HYPEBEAST Japan in 2019, emphasizing the importance of getting these Smedley collaborations just right.

John Smedley’s Ginza, Yokohama, Kyoto and Japanese web store will host the collaboration on November 20 for ¥35,000 JPY (approximately $335 USD).

Recently, fragment design remixed a series of snowboard-ready Oakley glasses and goggles.
