Justin Bieber Drops a Music Video for His New Single "Lonely"
In the ballad and visual, the artist reveals the emotional toll of childhood fame.
Justin Bieber simultaneously dropped a new single and music video today titled “Lonely.” Produced by benny blanco and FINNEAS, the track is a sobering look at the toll of a childhood spent in the limelight.
The music video stars a younger version of Bieber, played by Jacob Tremblay: a 14-year-old actor with credits in Room and Doctor Sleep. Tremblay wears a purple and white outfit — a call back to Bieber’s early-days style — and sits in an empty greenroom before making his way through the theater to the stage, where Bieber himself is the sole audience member.
“To be honest, the finished song is tough for me to listen to, considering how hard it was to get through some of those chapters. Hopefully telling this story will encourage others to vocalize what they are going through,” Bieber said of “Lonely” in a statement. The artist also spoke on the making of the song and video in a series of Instagram posts: “being someone in my position I believe it is powerful to express vulnerability and that’s why I believe this song is so powerful!” He also praised Tremblay’s acting and thanked him for bringing the story to life, adding “it was emotional to see him play me from the outside looking in.”
Bieber has also recently released a new track with Chance the Rapper and dropped an official sneak-peek of his upcoming Crocs collaboration.
