Multi-faceted designer Marc Newson has brought a series of rare furniture to the Gagosian gallery in Hong Kong, showcasing several large-scale pieces that were created using an ancient Chinese technique.

Newson, who has long been drawn to and influenced by Asian art, employed the use of cloisonné throughout the works, an enameling process that originated in the Mediterranean and made its way to China around the 14th century. Items such as sculptural chairs, desks and lounges have been constructed out of materials including enamel, glass and copper, and then coated with bright, expressive prints. Floral patterns take centerstage on several pieces, reflecting one of the customary symbols of beauty often found in Asian artworks.

“I’m always looking for processes and techniques that are completely anachronistic. I love recontextualizing these things in a modern time,” said Newson.

The Marc Newson exhibition will be on view from May 23 until July 27, 2019 at the Gagosian Hong Kong.
