For car enthusiasts, the BMW M3 is the benchmark of performance, and online magazine Carfection is delving into the history of the heralded race car for the street by going through each generation, starting with the E30.

The video, above, goes through the legacy and history of the 2-door street racing grail, explaining naturally its necessity as a homologation model — BMW was required to produce road-legal versions of its race cars in order to compete in the Group A racing division. The host explains detailed specifics of the E30, from its boxy wide fender flares and S14 engine, to minute specifications of the chassis and suspension that give the M3 more aggressive handling characteristics over the standard 3-series at the time.

After laying down a foundation, host Henry Catchpole enters the realm of the “AK07” Sport Evo Edition, which is a limited edition of only 600 units. The Sport Evo adopts true racing pedigree through techniques and customizable settings for specific conditions and even tracks — the rear spoiler is adjustable so that it may fit the needs of the high speed Monza circuit in Italy as well as the German Nürburgring track that required more downforce through its countless corners. The Sport Evo also has exclusive dimensions such as a lower ride height, larger front arch, thinner windshields, channeled brake ducts, a larger 2.5L displacement and much more.

Beyond the history of the E30 M3, BMW has maintained its legacy of the M brand and, now with the F80 version, holds true to drivers as the ultimate balance of performance and power. Carfection will discuss each version, with the E36, E46, E90 and F80 to continue in the coming episodes.

Watch the first episode above and learn about Redux’s restoration of the BMW E30 M3.
