Currently on a rare promotional run in order to support his forthcoming studio album The WIZRD, Future stopped by Genius‘ offices for an insightful conversation with Rob Markman. Notably, the Atlanta trailblazer decided to use about 22 minutes of airtime to open up about his biggest influences, his connection to Andre 3000, specific verses such as his “King’s Dead” bars, his new LP’s content and more. When the topic veered towards his lean usage, Future also delivered one of the most interesting parts of the entire exchange.

“I didn’t want to tell nobody I stopped drinking lean,” Future tells Genius‘ Rob Markman. “I felt like then they were gonna be like, ‘oh, his music changed because he ain’t drinking lean no more; oh, I can hear it when he changed it’ … It just be hard when your fans so used to a certain kind of way, a certain persona. You be afraid to change; you afraid that they not even gonna accept me anymore.”

You can check out Future’s entire interview with Rob Markman for Genius above. Future’s new studio album, The WIZRD, is scheduled to arrive this Friday, January 18.
