'Star Wars Resistance' Trailer Reveals Anime-Inspired Art Style
Featuring Poe Dameron and BB-8.
Disney has just unveiled a teaser trailer for Star Wars Resistance, the latest animated series for the franchise. The series will focus on Oscar Issac‘s character, Poe Dameron (alongside BB-8), who has recruited a young mechanic named ‘Kaz’ as a spy. Assuming this will also be canon with the film franchise, it uses quite a different art style than the 3D CGI style of the highly-revered Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels. On the inspiration for the show, longtime animation director Dave Filoni said,
“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots… I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
While fans have expressed mixed-feelings to the flat CGI style, it may be the answer to Donnie Yen’s analysis that kids in China did not grow up with a big Star Wars presence, and that the franchise just isn’t as popular within Asian culture.
