Tyler, the Creator Explains Why Cornell Jelly Is Now Black
During a press conference at Comic Con San Diego.
In June, Adult Swim brought Tyler, the Creator‘s own TV show The Jellies! to the network. Originally airing on Tyler’s Golf Media app, the series is about a family of jellyfish and their human son Cornell Jelly. In Comic-Con San Diego, a woman in the crowd asks Tyler why turned Cornell Jelly, who used to be a white character, black.
Tyler explains that there is not enough black cartoon characters on TV — he even asks the crowd to name five characters off the top of their heads. The Odd Future mastermind says that he wants Cornell to be the leader, not the comic relief or the side character, and not portray black stereotypes like “having a gun” or “playing basketball.” Watch it above.
