DJDS Spent Six Weeks Working on Kanye West's 'The Life of Pablo'
The duo discuss their album, LA dance scene and so much more.
MIC/LINE (formerly named Sound Check) is HYPEBEAST Radio‘s music-centric show that looks to bring you in-depth conversations with your favorite artists, digging into their origin stories and asking the questions you want answered. On our second episode, we sat down with Los Angeles-based duo DJDS.
Legends in the L.A. dance scene, DJDS – formerly DJ Dodger Stadium, consisting of Jerome LOL and Samo Sound Boy — initially built their following with their sample-based production, but evolved over time with their sound. Their production has become so beloved that Kanye West had to give them a call when he was working on The Life of Pablo. Sam and Jerome ended up working on six songs from that album, which dropped in 2016.
“The first day we met [Kanye West], I guess I thought that he maybe wanted to sample one of our songs or something like that,” said Samo. “That’s kind of as far as our expectations reached. But yeah, the first day we met him, within the first hour spending time with him, he asked, ‘I’m trying to finish up this album,’ which was The Life of Pablo, but it had a different name at that point, and he was like, ‘I’m trying to finish up this album, can I lock you guys off awhile, can you help me knock this out?’ And we’re like, ‘yeah of course.’ From that day, we just literally got to work with him, his whole team and circle and extended circle for like pretty much six weeks, but every single day until it came out.”
DJDS shared their third studio album, Big Wave More Fire, in March and it’s filled with big names such as The Dream, Khalid, Empress Of, Vic Mensa, Kacy Hill, Vory, Kevin Drew, Kelly Zutrau and others. The new LP followed up to 2016’s Stand Up And Speak.
For Episode 4, DJDS talk about LA’s electric scene then and now, their new album Big Wave More Fire, working with Kanye West and a ton more.
